rowing machineA rowing machine (also called ‘indoor rower‘ or ‘just rower‘) is a fitness gym machine that is used in workouts to perform actions that simulate watercraft rowing. The rowing machines were invented in the late 1900, but in the 1950s and 1960s, many rowing coaches began using it. The design of the machine was heavy and large including solid iron wheel and a mechanical brake on it. In the 1988s, the rowing machine with hydraulic flywheel design was released and it became popular gym machine worldwide.

Do You Need to Buy a Rowing Machine?

Total Body Exercise Machine – The rowing machine allows you to work out many muscle groups in one motion. When you training on the indoor rower, muscle groups that work are legs, shoulders, arms, back and abs.

Anaerobic and Aerobic – the rowing machine is suitable for different types of workouts such as aerobic (lungs and heart) and anaerobic (muscle strengthening).

Rowing Movement – the moving while working out on a rowing machine is close to the natural body movements, so there’s not any impact and the risk of injuries while training on it is low.

Resistance – one of the most important things that you need to consider before buying a rowing machine is what type of resistance is most suitable for your workouts on it:

  • Hydraulic resistance – it’s similar to what is used on the cars. These models of rowing machines have one of the most compact sizes and they could fit under bed. They are cheaper than the other models of rowing machines. But these rowing machines do not provide as accurate rowing motion as the other types of rowing machines. They can offer you a good workout, but the motion won’t be so smooth.
  • Magnetic resistance – these rowing machines powerful electromagnets which control the resistance. These rowing machines are similar to the rowers with hydraulic resistance, but they provide smoother motion. But they are not as easy to store as the rowing machines with hydraulic resistance.
  • Air resistance – when you train on this type of rower machines, the resistance will come from your own pace. In this way, you’ll have some control over your workouts. Air resistance rowing machines are by many off-season rowers. However, these rowing machines could be noisy.
  • Water resistance – these rowing machines contain a resistance tank that offers the best emulation of the actually rowing. You can customize your workouts on it by adding or removing water in the tank. However, because of the water tank, these machines are extremely heavy. Also, they require more free space than the other models of rowing machines.
