The bench press is the most popular gym machine in the bodybuilding sport. If a gym doesn’t include at least one bench press it cannot be called gym.

The structure of the bench press is simple – it contains horizontal bench and racks that hold an Olympic bar. Benches are manufactured by many different vendors, in an array of features, prices and qualities.

The beck press used to train mainly the middle chest muscles, but when you lift weight on it, the bench presses affect also the triceps and arms. You cannot lift big weights on it until you have strong triceps and arms.

  1. Check bench structure – the bench structure is simple, it’s made only by iron and/or steel, no electronic, no mechanic. It’s important the structure to allow the people who train on it to be able to lift big weights. It’s a good idea to buy a bench press that could allow you to lift at least 400 lbs on it.
  2. Check its width – if you have wide back, you’d better try to find wider bench press. If you train on too thin bench, it’s possible to injure your back.
  3. Bench press requires additional space – it’s very important if you buy a bench press for your home, you should be sure that there’s enough free space for it.

    Note: You need more space than the racks that hold an Olympic Bar, because the Olympic Bar’s width is bigger than them. Also, you’ll need additional space to put weights on the Olympic Bar.

    Tip: The width space you need is the width of the Olympic Bar + 30 inches.
