Magnesium-rich diet protects against stroke
Eat more foods rich in magnesium have a lower risk of ischemic stroke, the analysis of 7 international surveys of 250 thousand people, published in the journal American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.For a period of about 12 years, 6500 participants had a stroke, researchers report.
The results showed that 100 mg of magnesium taken with food every day, the risk of ischemic stroke decreased by 9%, says Susanna Larsson, professor at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.
The main source of magnesium is green leafy vegetables. Foods rich in minerals, are nuts, legumes and whole grains.
The recommended daily intake of magnesium is about 330 mg for men and about 280 mg for women. The requirements range from 40 to 280 mg for breastfeeding in adolescence.
Magnesium in the composition of inorganic compounds and is important for bone mineralization and enamel. In addition, however, more important is its role in a wide range of metabolic processes – from the synthesis of ribonucleic acids – DNA and RNA, that of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins.
Responsible for membrane transport of other electrolytes is related to the conduct of nerve impulses to the contraction of smooth and striated muscle-cross, including muscles in the vessels and heart.
