Memory loss begins at 45
Brain function begins to deteriorate from the age of 45, not after the age of 60 as previously thought, according to a study of the French Centre of Epidemiology and Public Health and University College London, published in the British Medical Journal.Within 10 years, scientists have studied the mental abilities of over 7000 people aged 45-70 years.
Participants made a series of cognitive tests at the beginning and end of study.
Found that participants who were aged between 45 and 49 years at baseline, showed 3.6% decline in cognitive function in the next 10 years.
Not surprisingly the investigators’ findings that mental deterioration “dial” speed age – participants aged 60-70 years at baseline have a 8.5 percent decline in cognitive abilities a decade later.
Scientists note that the larger the percentage of impairment of memory, the higher the risk of developing symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
To reduce the risk of brain disorders in the early years experts highlight the benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and nutrition care for heart health, regulating blood pressure and cholesterol.
According to other studies of people with good cardiovascular health in middle age have a lower risk of developing dementia in the elderly.
